When your highlights are the perfect shade of sun-bottled realness, your whole face sparkles.
The right hair color brings out your features while the wrong color will do just the opposite and wash you out – it’s up to your colorist, coupled with your knowledge of color theory, to create the perfect custom shade for you.
Speaking of stunning highlights, we haven’t been able to stop staring at the flattering golden highlights Khloe Kardashian debuted a few weeks back – they scream sunshine – even if you’re social distancing on your roof, there’s no denying the serious reflective properties at work. To find out how Khloe walked away with these killer blending highlights, we sat down with Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham, who is responsible for the look.
Get creative with transitioning color
The need to transition her color prompted Khloe’s latest color change. “Khloe’s color had grown out and she wanted a bit of a change from platinum blonde so we went with this beautiful bronde,” says Tracey.
To get the look, she used Redken Shades EQ, taking Khloe’s hair from platinum to bronde. She then added highlights to her hairline. “Redken Shades EQ Gloss is a demi-permanent haircolor that gives the hair a subtle touch of color and leaves it looking shiny and conditioned. It’s a colorist favorite because of its acidic formula, which makes it really gentle and conditioning on the hair – basically how your hair feels after you use a conditioner,” explains Tracey.
Placing it just right
Aside from the color, these highlights stand out for their placement and their size – we could argue they totally fall into the chunky color trend, which Tracey (basically) confirms. “It’s really all about personal preference and the overall look you are going for,” she notes, adding, “I’ve been doing chunky highlights on my celeb clients for years.”
To achieve a similar poppin’ color combo, even if you’re not working on a bronde canvas, remember that contrast is major key. “Make sure that your highlights and lowlights have enough contrast, so you can see that pop, otherwise it might all blend together,” Tracey advises.
Brass-free blonde
To maintain the look at home and prolong the life of your color between appointments, she recommends sticking with a toning shampoo, like Redken Color Extend Blondage Shampoo and Conditioner. If you are blondes or brondes, this will ensure your color stays bright and brass-free. “The Redken Bleach Recovery range is also a great option for clients who like to go ultra-light or might have compromised hair. It consists of a shampoo, lamellar water treatment and cica cream that repairs the look and feel of the hair, acting like a liquid bandage,” she shares.
We’re still swooning over THESE celeb colors.
