Feathered hair adds movement like no other. This style, which gets its name for resembling a bird’s feathers, has officially graduated from any 1970’s Farah Fawcett association. Feathered hair is now outfitting Hollywood’s hippest. Case in point, Rowan Blanchard, who just debuted the look in bob form. We checked in with her stylist Laurie Heaps to find out exactly how to recreate spring’s coolest cut.

The feather bob is definitely more pared-down and subtler than feathered cuts of yesteryear—it’s giving us major effortless vibes. “The ends of a feather are slightly textured but it keeps a curved shape that still looks blunt,” says Laurie of the crafted style. “This cut is perfect for Rowan right now. It is strong, edgy, yet has a softer side to it. It is the perfect mix of 90’s meets French girl chic.”

To get the look, Laurie cuts a “U” shape into the baseline. She then point cuts, literally using the points of her scissors to blur and her lines. “I wanted to keep the ends looking blunt, not overly texturized, just like a feather,” she explains.

Styling this cut is easy—you really can’t go wrong with such a versatile look. If you want your selfie to resemble Rowan’s, start with a great styling spray to add texture and prep the hair. Laurie reaches for White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Styling Spray $19.60 before adding heat. “I have been using this Thermal spray for years on sets,” shares Laurie. “Hair has the hold you need for looks to stay yet the shine and softness is there.” Pro-tip – to make sure the product is saturated and evenly distributed, divide hair into sections, misting all over and brushing the product through.

To make sure the style is silky smooth, she goes in with GHD’s Classic 1 Inch Styler, $150 to de-puff and de-frizz. A side part gives the style edge without being obvious. Laurie lightly applies BioSilk’s Volumizing Therapy Texturizing Powder, $13.10 for volume and texture. To finish the look, she reaches for the Redken’s Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist, $14.39  which pulls double-duty as a light hold hairspray meets shine spray.

“This cut works great for finer hair types,” explains Laurie. “But it truly is a universal look if you are willing to put the time into styling and straightening it. If hair is on the thicker side, you can ask your stylist to use thinning shears to remove extra bulk.” To add volume to thin hair, Laurie relies on Ouai. “I love to use OUAI Soft Mousse, $28 on my clients! I apply it to the roots for just the right amount of lift,” she says.

Now that you’ve got the cut covered, the best spring color is HERE.
